Before graduating I joined Blackdown Hills Artists and Makers (www.bhaam.org.uk), and was lucky to be awarded a bursary to produce work in response to the crafts and industries of the Blackdown Hills past and present. In total twenty three artists and makers were awarded bursaries under the project title Skills Unearthed.  I decided to continue making work, using traditional woodworking skills such as whittling and charring. With the permission of Somerset Wildlife Trust and Natural England, I was allowed to exhibit my work in the heart of Thurlbear Wood. The exhibition runs from 3rd -18th November 2012.

I have been visiting the site almost every day, and at different times of the day to catch the effect of the sun, shadows, rain and fog. I was very cross in just missing a heavy frost last week. Jack's fingers beautifully enhance the grain of the charred wood, rather like a temporary liming wax.
Moulds and lichen are beginning to grow on the Old Man's Beard, and I was really pleased to see this cobweb. It shows that my work is now becoming part of the environment in which it has been placed.

The paths both to, and through, this exhibition site have become wider and much more clearly defined as we enter the second week. Although this has been achieved through collaboration, the end result is worthy of Richard Long!

Visitors to the site were asked to write down the first three words that came into their minds after visiting the site, using a white liquid paint pen and the charred wooden labels hanging from the oak trees. The results will be posted on the blog at the end of the exhibition.

I have talked to lots of visitors during my time in the woods, and have received very positive comments. Some people visit every day just to see what new things have been written. Some have come back with their cameras, their families and their friends, while others have changed their regular dog walking routes in order to visit the site.
The image in the above picture has proved to be a magnet to one particular visitor, as the position of the hazels poles is altered at least every couple of days!

On Thursday 20th September I was busy in food shopping mode in Lidl when my mobile rang and I found myself talking to BBC Radio Somerset! They wanted to interview me for somerset Art week as a recent graduate, and to talk about my exhibition in the White Space at Somerset College. My interview by Emma Britten was a bit nerve wracking for a first timer, but even worse when I got it on iplayer the next day.......
As part of Somerset Art Week I was asked to participate in a Post graduate exhibition at the White Space Gallery in Somerset College, entitled 'Thread.' Five Fine Art, and one Graphic Design student were selected to take part in this exhibition.

Playing the Black Notes

After the end of my degree in June, I was approached by Somerset Art Works about installing my stick circle as part of an exhibition at Slimbridge Wildfowl and Wetland Trust in Gloucestershire. The exhibition entitled 'Flight of the Cranes' was to be the venue for the origami paper crane project led by artist Lucy Lean (see http://greatcraneart.blogspot.co.uk). Other artists and makers contributed to this celebration of the Great Cranes, which will continue till September 2012.

Cossington Primary School asked me to lead an art project to improve the look of their school fence. As the school is situated close to the Somerset Levels, I thought it might be a good idea if we did something to do with the flora and fauna of the area. The Great Cranes have been recently reintroduced to the Levels, so my proposal was that I make six, four foot plywood cranes which could then be decorated before being fixed to the fence. For more information on the Great Crane Project see http://www.thegreatcraneproject.org.uk

The whole school participated in the the project on 19th June 2012. By the end of the day we had made a Jubilee crane, an Olympic crane, a Somerset Levels crane, an abstract crane, a black and white patterned crane, and a black and white hand printed crane. Here are the photos....

Here is the school fence with attached Great Cranes. We painted the legs directly on to the fence once the birds were fixed in place.

My first post

Having completed a B.A. (Hons) in Fine Art in June 2012, I was hoping to have a bit of a rest before contemplating the hard work of self employment, but life doesn't always work out the way you plan!
